Leuven, just another sunday …

by Philippe on Sep.22, 2009, under Day To Day, Events

Just another lazy Sunday in Leuven but with numerous things to do : opening of a new museum, a fair, street artists, art in the park, etc.

So the ideal situation for some (and some not so) candid photos of people enjoying one of the last warm sunny days of the year. I wish there were more days like this…..

Marktrock 2009

by Philippe on Sep.06, 2009, under Events

I have mixed feelings about Marktrock. For most people it’s 2 days of fun and music.
For me it’s 2 days of noise, parking problems, people doing R-rated stuff in the hallway of my building and act surprised when somebody tries to enter the building. I also rather miss the coffee stand with great coffee/amaretto cocktails and the great dj-set.

I also don’t get why people can enter the old market with mobile phones(camera included) and point-and-shoot camera’s, but when you have a DSLR you are not allowed. People with DSLR take most of the time pictures, people with point-and-shoot camera’s (and phones) are recording the whole show and uploading it on Youtube. So I’m wondering, why aren’t DSLR’s allowed ?

Leuven Sings

by Philippe on Jul.30, 2009, under Events

I went to “Vlaanderen zingt”, the Leuven edition.
Imagine a lot of people singing a bunch of “wrong” songs. Apparently a lot of people think they can sing. I can asure you, they can’t. But they looked like they were having fun.
Some of the songs were okay, they brought back some memories, some good, some not so good.
So why was I there taking pictures when clearly I wasn’t there to sing along …well, since one of the people organising the Leuven edition is an old colleague of mine, I wanted to surprise him with a few pictures of “his” event.

Grandmaster Flash @ Depot

by Philippe on May.10, 2009, under Events

I had a duo-ticket for US3 and Grandmaster Flash. But sadly the concert of Grand Master Flash was disappointing too. A concert that is announced as “Hip hop legend Grandmaster Flash is back ! He’s gonna promote his first new album in 20 years. He worked with Q-Tip, KRS-One, Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg on this album”
So, when you would read this, what would you expect ? I guess some hip hop ? To my surprise it was a dj-set (imagine stuff like nirvana “team spirit” mixed with daftpunk “around the world”). Another difference between the USA and Belgium is that in Belgian clubs the dj doesn’t shout every 20 seconds “raise your hands, I can’t see the hands”.
After taking a few pictures of Grandmaster Flash behind his turntables I was feeling a bit bored an went to the bar.

US3 @ Depot

by Philippe on May.10, 2009, under Events

Another night at the depot, this time with US3 (remember the song Cantaloop ?) and Trixie Withley as a supporting act.
She had a great voice and she was quite funny too. Sadly I arrived so late that I only heard 2 songs. Afterwards US3 ! I had high hopes for US3 but I was a bit disappointed after the concert. All the songs sounded the same, the only highlight was the song cantaloop. I was almost glad the concert didn’t take so long.

US3

I’ve learned another thing ..apparently this is the way how a dj should play ..

DADA Life @ Depot

by Philippe on May.08, 2009, under Events

Part two of another great evening at the depot DADA Life.
I was expecting songs like “fun fun fun”. While not bad, it’s not great either. To my surprise it was like a short version of “10 days off”. Pounding beats, lots of strobo, people jumping up and down, strong lights back-lighting the artists…in short a photographer’s nightmare but I loved the music !

Dropping Dishes @ Depot

by Philippe on May.08, 2009, under Events

Part one of another great evening at the depot : Dropping Dishes !
Being the supporting act for DADA Life, Master Lie & Johnny Ray were having a blast playing electro-rock tunes. Great guys from Leuven of course !

DroppingDishes

I’m really looking forward to their first full album. Hopefully more stuff like the great song Zuppalicious..

Novastar @ Depot

by Philippe on May.07, 2009, under Events

Okay, sometimes you mess up. The previous day I tested ISO6400 on my camera and I forgot to reset it. So the whole concert at the depot I was happily shooting at very high ISO’s and lots of noise in the pictures. You can’t have great pictures every time.

Stereo MC’s @ Depot

by Philippe on May.05, 2009, under Events

Another night at the depot. Ever tried to photograph a rabbit on acid ? That was the feeling I had when I tried to photograph the lead singer. Never mind composition or light measuring, keeping my lens pointed in the general direction of the lead singer was already a big challenge ! The guy was jumping the whole time (even between songs) and I guess he must drink lots of healthy smoothies to keep his energy up (or something else).

The concert was great though, I was more dancing than taking pictures.

Cap Blanc Nez

by Philippe on Apr.27, 2009, under Events

Because it was raining on a Sunday and wasn’t really in the mood to stay indoors, I decided to drive to Cap Blanc Nez. Being just next to Calais it’s really close to home but you immediately feel like you’re on holiday. I want to return there with a model for a model shoot ! You have the cliffs, the beach, the big rocks, the scenery…everything you can possible want !
